Labour promise to regulate powerful AI in King’s speech

The UK government will zone in on the companies developing 'the most powerful artificial intelligence models'

King Charles has detailed the new Labour government’s 40 proposed bills in his speech at the House of Lords.

Alongside the focus on planning reform and a promise to bring rail back into public ownership came Kier Starmer’s plan for AI regulation. As part of a New Deal for Working People, the Government’s attention will focus on ‘the most powerful’ AI models.

“[The New Deal for Working People] will seek to establish the appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models.”

This comes after the newly appointed tech minister, Peter Kyle, warned AI companies that they would come up against ‘a very assertive government’ if they fail to ensure the safety of their models.

Kyle has proposed upgrading the previous government’s voluntary testing data agreement with AI companies to a mandatory one, in order to better understand the trajectory of the technology.
